My story

Hello! My name is Gretchen Schultz. I am a creative journalist working toward my Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at the University of Oklahoma. I am set to graduate in May of 2026. As I continue my journalistic studies, my love for learning has been reignited, inspiring me to approach the world with curiosity, ask questions that truly matter, and continuously seek out new perspectives. During my time at OU, specifically with the OU Daily, I have gained hands-on experience in the copy editing field, which has been extremely beneficial in developing my skills as a journalist and has helped solidify a career path for my future. I enjoy how tedious copy editing can get, and I think it is very intriguing how AP is constantly changing and growing with the world. I love discovering new words or finding innovative ways to rewrite a sentence or paragraph, and I take pride in crafting creative headlines, decks, and SEO content. I have loved reading, writing, and creating from a young age, and working on these stories is genuinely a dream come true. The OU Daily newsroom has become a second home to me, and I feel so blessed to be able to go in every day and learn something new from my coworkers and incredible staff. The OU Daily is a collaborative effort, and I am so grateful to be part of it.

My story begins in Richmond, VA, but after moving at a young age, I consider Dallas, TX, my hometown. Growing up, I was surrounded by fantastic family and friends, but still struggled with my mental health from a very young age. Although faced with troubles and worries, I always endured, and still do. I consider endurance to be one of my greatest strengths for this very reason. Coming to OU from Dallas was definitely a big change for me, and I truly had no idea what I wanted to do or what I should have expected. However, after three years of fascinating classes in Gaylord and hours spent in the newsroom, I can confidently say that college has helped me grow tremendously as a person and as a journalist. I look forward to post-graduation, applying the many skills I have learned and to the opportunities that await me!
